About me
Dr Jamal Hayat is a Consultant Gastroenterologist in London and Surrey, specialising in acid reflux, heartburn, swallowing difficulties, and digestive symptoms such as abdominal pain, bloating, and change in bowel habit. He sees private patients at Parkside Hospital in Wimbledon and St Anthony's Hospital in Sutton, offering rapid access to consultations, gastroscopy, and colonoscopy.
Dr Hayat is a national expert in gastro-oesophageal reflux disease (GORD) and eosinophilic oesophagitis. He is a Specialist Adviser to NICE on reflux disease, was the UK Principal Investigator for the first licensed treatment for eosinophilic oesophagitis, and is a co-author of the British Society of Gastroenterology guidelines on this condition. Patients with persistent heartburn, acid reflux, silent reflux (laryngopharyngeal reflux), chronic cough, difficulty swallowing, or food sticking in the throat or chest are seen in his specialist clinics, alongside those with achalasia, hiatus hernia, Barrett's oesophagus, and non-cardiac chest pain.
He also provides comprehensive general gastroenterology care, investigating and managing indigestion, abdominal pain, bloating, food intolerance, diarrhoea, constipation, rectal bleeding, unexplained weight loss, iron deficiency anaemia, coeliac disease, irritable bowel syndrome (IBS), small intestinal bacterial overgrowth (SIBO), and inflammatory bowel disease (Crohn's disease and ulcerative colitis), as well as the diagnosis of stomach and bowel cancer, including assessment after a positive FIT (bowel cancer screening) test.
Dr Hayat is a JAG-accredited endoscopist and trainer, performing high-quality gastroscopy and colonoscopy with sedation, including therapeutic procedures such as polypectomy and endoscopic dilatation. As Clinical Lead for the GI Physiology Laboratory at St George's Hospital and Endoscopy Lead at Queen Mary's Hospital, Roehampton, he introduced advanced diagnostic tests for reflux and swallowing disorders, including high-resolution oesophageal manometry, 24-hour impedance-pH monitoring, wireless Bravo pH monitoring, and EndoFLIP � giving his patients access to the full range of specialist oesophageal investigations in one service.
Dr Hayat has been a Consultant Gastroenterologist and Honorary Senior Lecturer at St George's University Hospitals since 2014. He trained at Imperial College School of Medicine and completed an MD research degree in advanced physiological techniques and biomarkers in gastrointestinal disease. His research has been presented at the American Gastroenterology Association (AGA), United European Gastroenterology (UEG), and the British Society of Gastroenterology (BSG), receiving awards from both the AGA and BSG. He remains actively involved in clinical research into new treatments for eosinophilic oesophagitis, reflux disease, bile acid diarrhoea, irritable bowel syndrome, and gastroparesis, and teaches gut physiology to medical students at St George's, University of London.
