About me

Dr Hayat is a Consultant Gastroenterologist and Honorary Senior Lecturer at St George's University Hospitals, a role he has held since 2014. He trained at Imperial College School of Medicine and completed an MD research degree during his specialist training, focusing on advanced physiological techniques and biomarkers in gastrointestinal disease.

His research has been presented at major international and national conferences, including the American Gastroenterology Association, United European Gastroenterology, and the British Society of Gastroenterology, and has received awards from both the AGA and BSG.

Dr Hayat is a Specialist Adviser to NICE on gastro-oesophageal reflux disease. He was the UK Principal Investigator for the first licensed treatment for eosinophilic oesophagitis and is a co-author of the British Society of Gastroenterology guidelines on this condition.

He is the Endoscopy Lead at Queen Mary's Hospital, Roehampton, and Clinical Lead for the GI Physiology Laboratory at St George's Hospital. In these roles, he introduced advanced diagnostic techniques including high-resolution oesophageal manometry, ambulatory impedance-pH monitoring, wireless Bravo pH monitoring, and EndoFLIP. He is a JAG-accredited endoscopist and trainer, providing high-quality gastroscopy and colonoscopy, and performs therapeutic procedures such as polypectomy and endoscopic dilatation.

Alongside his clinical work, Dr Hayat teaches undergraduate medical students at St George's and is actively involved in clinical research into new treatments for eosinophilic oesophagitis, reflux disease, bile acid diarrhoea, irritable bowel syndrome, and gastroparesis.

Dr Hayat runs specialist clinics for patients with reflux, indigestion, and swallowing disorders, including achalasia and eosinophilic oesophagitis. He also provides comprehensive general gastroenterology care, managing conditions such as anaemia, altered bowel habit, bloating, inflammatory bowel disease (Crohn's disease and ulcerative colitis), and gastrointestinal cancers, including stomach and bowel cancer.
