About me
Mr Balaji Purushothaman qualified in medicine in 2002 from The TN Dr MGR Medical University, Chennai, India.
He moved to the North East of England in 2005 where he did his Basic Surgical Training in Newcastle. He obtained his MRCS from the Royal College of Surgeons of Edinburgh. After this, he entered specialty training in Trauma & Orthopaedics. He completed his training at various hospitals in the North East. Mr Purushothaman trained with a focus on spinal surgery. He successfully acquired his FRCS in 2013.
He then undertook the AO Spine Fellowship at the Princess Alexandra Hospital, Mater Hospital, and Lady Cilento in Brisbane, Australia. There he received extensive training in various conditions of the spine, including degeneration, trauma, infections, and malignancy. He was then appointed as a consultant spinal surgeon at Sunderland Royal Hospital.
Mr Purushothaman treats patients with neck and back problems. He focuses on patients whose conditions are degenerative, or arise from infections, trauma and cancer. He has presented at national and international conferences and has extensively published his work.
He enjoys teaching and is a faculty for various courses for medical students and orthopaedic trainees
Outside of work Mr Purushothaman enjoys spending time with his family and friends, travelling, and exploring new places.
