About me

Toby is a consultant Orthopaedic and Trauma surgeon, and a specialist shoulder and elbow surgeon. His NHS practice is at Kings College Hospital, one of London’s major trauma centres.

He manages the whole spectrum of shoulder problems as well as sports injuries and complex upper limb trauma, and specialises in performing arthroscopic (keyhole), arthroplasty (joint replacement) and trauma surgery. His active commitment to the scientific advancement of the field of surgery allows him to offer the most up-to-date and beneficial options available to patients. His sporting background has encouraged his collaborative approach when managing athletes.

Toby studied medicine at Oxford University (St. Edmund Hall) and completed his clinical studies at University College London. He undertook his early surgical training on the Kings College rotation as well working at St. Vincent’s Hospital, Sydney. Following an additional year of research into shoulder surgery and in particular the analysis of outcomes he was appointed onto the London higher Orthopaedic training rotation where he became a Fellow of the Royal College of Surgeons.
Toby has also undertaken two recognised sub-specialist fellowship trainings in shoulder and trauma surgery. The first at the internationally renowned Cape Shoulder Institute in Cape Town and at the University of Stellenbosch, and the second at Kings College Hospital – a nationally recognised upper limb and major trauma surgery fellowship. Toby has a particular in interest in outcomes, and consequently completed the Value Based Healthcare course at Harvard Business School. Leveraging this knowledge he has helped to re-design a number of NHS services and continues to provide healthcare advisory support to providers and commissioners of healthcare as a subject matter expert particularly in the field of musculoskeletal outcomes and value delivery.

Toby is active in the world of research and education. He has given over 30 research presentations at national and international conferences and has published over 30 research papers, as well writing book chapters for international shoulder textbooks. He has designed and led several studies into restructuring and delivering Trauma and Orthopaedic services as well as producing shoulder research that led to the award of an MSc in Orthopaedics. He also provides peer review support to internationally recognised journals. He is part of the King's College Hospital FRCS faculty and provides academic support to the department’s trainees. Toby also actively participates in charity work and is a keen sportsman with a particular interest in rugby and rowing having played at university, regional and national levels. However these days this is from the side-lines rather than on the pitch itself whilst supporting his children!
