About me
Deciding when we could do with a little bit of help to understand ourselves, the underlying motivations driving us to do the things we do and having the desire to change something about these, I see as a huge personal strength.
I would aim to talk to you over the first two or so sessions, to come up with a hypothesis about what it is that is driving the problems that are troubling you in the present. Very often we can see repeating patterns of behaving or relating to other people that leave an individual feeling anxious or bad about themselves or others in some way. These 'traps' are something we all do in fact, but when they become really troublesome, they can be very hard to spot. I would work with you to find out what some of these are, talk them through to see if you agree and then come up with a plan, with you, about how you can best tackle some of these issues in the present, to make some positive changes in your life. This way of thinking about a persons difficulties can be applied to just about any sort of problem.
As a Clinical Psychologist, I am trained to use a range of therapies to both figure out what is causing the problems and come up with a range of sometimes creative interventions that are specifically suited to you and the way you think and do things. Some of the approaches I would draw upon might be cognitive behavioural, psychodynamic, Compasion Focussed Therapy, behavioural, 'new wave' therapies (e.g. mindfulness, acceptance and commitment therapy) or more specific trauma focused cognitive therapies like EMDR. The essence of this is that you get an integrated approach, that best suits you.
If you are not sure whether this approach sounds right for you, feel free to either contact me by email if you have any further questions. I can seldom answer my phone during the working day so email or via my website contact page is usually the best way to contact me initially.
The most important thing with any therapy is that you can connect with your therapist in the right way.
