About me

Mr Ray is a dynamic, young orthopaedic surgeon who trained in London and the south-east of England. Having worked as a consultant in Southampton, he brought his trauma experience to Basildon Hospital in 2015.

He has since established himself as one of the leaders in shoulder and elbow surgery across Essex with established private practices on Harley Street, in Brentwood and in Southend-on-Sea.

With a keen interest in sports medicine, he obtained a diploma in this field and has put it to good use looking after amateur boxers as an accredited England Boxing doctor and professional rugby players at the London Irish rugby football club. He has also had the good fortune of attending to the needs of Southend United football team and professional snooker players. He has attracted many sports people into his clinic to include veteran badminton champions representing Great Britain and military staff whose athletic prowess needs restoring back to normality.

In addition, Mr Ravi Ray is also working towards a Masters in clinical education and is an enthusiastic medical educator. He led education and medical training in his department at Basildon Hospital for five years, looking after doctors and allied health professionals.

With fellowships from Southampton University hospitals and Guys and St Thomas’s Hospitals in upper limb surgery, he is able to use the latest techniques in keyhole and open surgery.

He was awarded Doctor of the Year at Basildon Hospital for his enthusiasm to bring Virtual Fracture Clinics to Essex for the first time. He adapted best practice from multiple other institutions and embedded these into the orthopaedic department with tremendous success, attracting the attention of BBC Radio Essex, Basildon Echo newspaper and was proud to be published on the front cover of the hospital magazine. Within these clinics, he is able to assess up to 50 cases per clinic and deliver healthcare advice over the phone, preventing 75% of these patients ever needing to attend for a face-to-face consultation and has saved the hospital ÂŁ150,000 per year.

He is highly active in the national recruitment of junior doctors into specialty orthopaedic training, and regularly scrutinise this is in practice through audit. He has presented research locally, nationally and internationally.

He leads many teams across Essex and beyond to discuss and confirm the best options for complex patients through open and honest discussions with his learners colleagues.

He has excellent working relationships with his administrative staff, the physiotherapy team and nursing team to make sure that the patient journey is as good as it can be. He makes sure that the most sensible option is presented to every patient, with each treatment plan made bespoke to that patient. Occasionally lifestyle changes and exercise therapy will surpass the results of steroid injections and surgery but it is only with the involvement and education of his patients that he makes combined decisions to get the best result.

Having recently published articles in the national press both in the Mail on Saturday and in the Evening Standard, he is able to showcase much of the innovative work he has undertaken recently, having been selected as one of the few surgeons in the country to pioneer the use of human tissues in complex rotator cuff pathology.

He performs four times the national average of shoulder replacements each year when compared to his peers, so understands when to offer shoulder replacements if the situation has deteriorated far enough to need this. As a high volume surgeon, clinical competence has come through repetition allowing for clinical results well above the average.

He is elegantly able to combine straight talking with good humour and clinical excellence to make his patients feel comfortable, welcome and involved in their care. He understands the need to respect his patients and is able to offer timely health care to an incredibly high standard.
