Mr Foroughi has played an active and key role in the development of cerebrospinal fluid (CSF) disorders as a subspecialty, encompassing all types of hydrocephalus (especially normal pressure hydrocephalus), Chiari malformation and syringomyelia, CSF pathway lesions (e.g. colloid cysts), and arachnoid cysts of the brain and spine.
Mr Foroughi's training and practice include brain tumour surgery; vascular surgery of the brain and spine (aneurysms, AVMs, DAVFs and cavernous haemangiomas); keyhole brain surgery; lumbar and cervical disc surgery; cervical disc replacement; spinal stenosis decompression; and a strong focus on the optimal management of CSF disorders (hydrocephalus, Chiari malformation and syringomyelia, arachnoid cysts, and CSF pathway lesions).
Mr Foroughi grew up in Wales and qualified from Sheffield Medical School in 1992. He obtained both parts of the FRCS at first attempt and commenced his extensive and highly subspecialised neurosurgical training at the Royal London Hospital in 1997, before completing his formal neurosurgical training programme at the University Hospital of Wales, gaining extensive experience in both cranial and spinal surgery.
This was followed by three fellowships, including two long and intensive international fellowship programmes, during which he also completed an MSc in Neurovascular Diseases. The first was close training with the world-renowned neurosurgical team in Helsinki, Finland, specialising in neurovascular conditions, microneurosurgical techniques and skull base surgery. This was followed by completion of the accredited North American paediatric neurosurgical fellowship programme in Vancouver, Canada, with a focus on brain tumours, epilepsy and neuroendoscopy.
Following his return to the United Kingdom, he worked as a Senior Fellow at Queen Elizabeth Hospital (QEH), Birmingham, specialising in skull base surgery and minimally invasive techniques, before being appointed Consultant Neurosurgeon at QEH Birmingham. While working in the UK's largest and busiest neurosurgical unit, he supported the National Military Service and was heavily involved in the development of neurotrauma and neurovascular services, spine surgery (including disc surgery, degenerative disease and spinal tumours), and neuro-oncology. In keeping with the unit's international reputation, he further specialised in the management of hydrocephalus and the treatment of Chiari malformations, syringomyelia, colloid and arachnoid cysts, with particular expertise in neuroendoscopic procedures.
He was a full-time NHS Consultant in Brighton between 2015 and 2022, in addition to his consultant experience in Birmingham, and is now in full-time private practice in brain and spine surgery. He has more than 28 years' experience in neurosurgery and is passionate about the adoption of beneficial new technologies, the use of artificial intelligence, collaborative MDT and team working, and the continued development of CSF disorders as a subspecialty.
He has performed more than 4,000 neurosurgical procedures, has presented and published over 40 articles and abstracts in scientific meetings and journals, and is the author of several neurosurgical book chapters.
He and his team have received awards for neurosurgery and innovation, and he has a special interest in the application of artificial intelligence in medicine.
