About me

Dr Swan qualified from Liverpool University in Biochemistry [1986] and thereafter Medicine [1991]. He served in Army for over 20 years and has extensive experience in Sport and Exercise Medicine [SEM] - in diagnosing, treating and managing Musculoskeletal and Sports Injuries. He completed his SEM Specialty Training and was listed on the GMC register in Jan, 2011.

Dr Swan was based at the Internationally recognised Ministry of Defence Rehabilitation Centre - DMCR Headley Court for 8 years. Over this period, he was the Consultant Lead for Spinal Rehabilitation, Lower Limb Rehabilitation Team and the Tri-Services ‘Elite Sports Injuries’ Clinic.

Dr Swan endorses a multi-disciplinary team [MDT] approach working with the patient and physical therapy team to provide a ‘holistic’ and ‘bespoke’ rehabilitation plan, enabling individuals’ to return to their pre-injury activity levels.

Dr Swan has worked across a diverse range of elite sport teams and athletes. He provided Consultant Sport and Exercise Medicine [SEM] support at the London 2012 Olympics in the Athlete Village ‘Polyclinic’ treating injured Athletes across all Nations. He has worked in a variety of sports including Professional Rugby, Football, PGA European Tour / Ryder Cup, Athletics, British Biathlon, and British Disabled Skiing. Dr Swan has been the Team Doctor for the England U16s, U18s, England Students, England Counties U20s RFU, Senior England Mens Hockey and England Lions [ECB] Teams.

He is qualified in diagnostic and interventional musculoskeletal [MSK] Ultrasound and is on the teaching Faculty for the Centre for Ultrasound Studies, Bournemouth University and is an MSK ultrasound examiner.

Dr Swan is a Fellow of the Faculty of Sport and Exercise Medicine Ireland– FFSEM [Ire]. He was a member of the Irish Council [2016-20] and has regularly provides educational support to their scientific meetings.

He has previously been on the FSEM [UK] Council [2013-21], a Faculty Examiner [2013-21] and the Chair of the Faculty Examination Committee for the SEM Diploma / Membership Examinations [2016-21].
