About me
As a clinical psychologist, I work with adults, children, adolescents and families to address a variety of psychological difficulties. With over 25 years experience, I am skilled in a variety of psychological interventions, drawing on different approaches as appropriate.
I work with adults experiencing a variety of difficulties from depression (including grief, low mood, self harm and suicidal ideation) and anxiety (eg PTSD/trauma, OCD, phobias) to loss and relationship issues.
I am particularly interested in working with children and adolescents: whether working with anxiety, self harm, poor self esteem or family conflict, I aim to help parents and children feel supported, and to foster loving family relationships.
Many people who have experienced trauma (eg road traffic accidents, traumatic bereavement, job or serious financial loss, physical and sexual abuse) find EMDR to be particularly effective. (EMDR can be used soon after a traumatic experience.) I find CBT a particularly helpful approach in working with OCD, anxiety, depression, phobias and panic attacks.
Life can throw up situations that can be very difficult to handle and I aim to give clients a psychological perspective which can give them a helpful way to view and manage their situation. My approach is person centred and compassionate, and I place an emphasis on connecting with emotions and bodily sensations, in order to put thoughts into perspective.
I have additional training and qualifications in cognitive behavioural therapy (CBT), eye movement desensitisation and reprocessing (EMDR), systemic and family therapy and solution focused brief therapy. I have been influenced by person centred therapy and have a particular interest in mindfulness approaches, including acceptance and commitment therapy (ACT).
I have experience of working with people with learning and/or developmental difficulties, for example autistic spectrum conditions (ASC) and health difficulties, for example diabetes.
I have taught on the Doctorate training courses in Clinical, and Educational Psychology at Leeds and Manchester Universities, and have run training sessions on a wide variety of psychological issues for different organisations.
I worked as an Educational Psychologist for 9 years, and a senior and principal Clinical Psychologist in the NHS for 9 years. Since 2014 have worked with adults, adolescents, children and families solely in private practice.
I am registered with the Health & Care Professions Council (HCPC) as both a Clinical and an Educational Psychologist, and I am a Chartered Psychologist and Associate Fellow of the British Psychological Society (BPS). I am an EMDR Therapist and am qualified to teach mindfulness to help with low mood and anxiety.
