About me
Mr Toby Baring is an consultant Orthopaedic surgeon specialising in shoulder and elbow surgery.
Mr Baring studied at Newcastle University and qualified in 2000. He passed the FRCS in 2012. Mr Baring wrote a postgraduate doctorate at Imperial College London with Professor Roger Emery in 2006, focusing on rotator cuff surgery. He undertook his specialist orthopaedic training on the Royal National Orthopaedic Hospital rotation in North London. Mr Baring spent his Fellowship year in Nice, France, working under Professor Pascal Boileau (world renowned shoulder specialist). On his return from France, Mr Baring was appointed as a NHS Trauma and Orthopaedic Consultant in 2015 and works as an associated professor at Imperial College NHS trust.
Mr Baring's areas of expertise are shoulder arthroscopy and joint replacement, and shoulder and elbow trauma. He employs modern techniques to provide the best possible outcomes from surgery. Mr Baring performs 300-400 procedures per year.
Mr Baring is active in both research and training. He is regularly invited to speak at national and international congresses, and to perform complex operations which are broadcast live to conference audiences. Mr Baring trains surgeons from around the globe in innovative shoulder procedures. He has published papers on shoulder instability, rotator cuff injuries, shoulder joint replacement and elbow fractures.
Mr Baring understands that upper limb problems can be extremely disabiling and have a severe impact on one's quality of life. He will take time to understand patients' conditions on a case by case basis. He aims to tailor treatment to the individual to address their needs and concerns. His objective is to always treat and cure without surgery and only advises operative intervention when absolutely necessary.
