About me
Dr Moj Goonewardene is a Consultant Cardiologist at Royal Papworth and Bedford Hospitals. He sees patients with breathlessness, palpitations, dizziness, collapsing, high blood pressure and chest pain. As well as general Cardiology he has a specialist interest in heart failure, cardiomyopathies, primary prevention of cardiovascular disease, hypertension, hypercholesterolemia, loop recorder implantation, pacemaker implantation, cardiac resynchronisation therapy and implantable cardio defibrillators. He is also able to offer same day 48hr and 7day ECG patch cardiac monitors at the initial consultation.
He was born and brought up in north London and went to school at Queen Elizabeth’s Boys School Barnet. He qualified from Southampton Medical School in 2001, and completed his general medical training on the south coast in Bournemouth, Southampton and Poole.
His specialty training in cardiology includes training in several large tertiary referral centres; Southampton University Hospital, Bristol Heart Institute University Hospital Bristol and Royal Papworth Hospital in Cambridge.
The last 2 years of his training was spent at Royal Papworth Hospital, the UK's largest specialist cardiothoracic unit, training in the Cardiac Device Implantation, Advanced Heart Failure and Cardiac Transplantation.
He is a certified cardiac device specialist with the American International Board of Heart Rhythm Examiners and has accredited in adult echocardiography and doppler with the British Society of Echocardiography.
In April 2013, Dr Goonewardene was appointed cardiology consultant as a joint appointment between Hinchingbrooke and Papworth hospitals. He spent two years as the lead at Hinchingbrooke Hospital. During those two years he developed a clear strategy to grow the department, improve patient care, patient experience, driving increased efficiency through leading a strong cardiology team.
In February 2016 he was appointed Consultant Cardiologist between Bedford NHS Hospital and Royal Papworth Hospital, and accepted this position to work in a larger department and be closer to home. He is the clinical lead for the Bedford Integrated Heart Failure Team and also the clinical lead for the Bedford Hospital Pacemaker Service. He works closely with the local CCG to improve cardiovascular care in the community. He continues to work at Royal Papworth Hospital implanting complex cardiac devices for his Bedfordshire heart failure patients.
