About me
Following my pre-clinical training, I was awarded a National Scholarship and graduated with Excellence and Honors from Cairo University in 1995. My early surgical training, followed by five years of Specialist Registrar residency training, was completed in Advanced Cancer Surgery and Surgical Oncology at the National Cancer Institute (UICC), a major tertiary referral centre for complex and recurrent cancers, in collaboration with Gustave Roussy, Europe's leading cancer centre.
During my higher surgical training, I completed three years of clinical academic research evaluating surgical outcomes and quality of life following colorectal cancer treatment, leading to the award of my Master's Degree with Excellence in 1999. My research was published nationally and internationally and presented at leading congresses and conferences. I later completed a further three years of research in Neuroblastoma, a rare childhood abdominal malignancy, and was awarded a PhD in Surgical Oncology. I also undertook additional research at University of Bristol and Southmead Hospital Research Unit exploring the impact of Diabetes Mellitus and hyperglycaemia on cancer progression and treatment response.
Further advanced training in laparoscopic and endoscopic surgery was completed over six years at Addenbrooke's Hospital and Norfolk and Norwich University Hospital through the East of England National Higher Surgical Training Programme, following which GMC approval for consultant practice was awarded.
I further developed specialist expertise in incontinence surgery at Bristol Royal Infirmary and University College Hospital, while refining advanced laparoscopic skills at the European Institute of Telesurgery in Strasbourg, France, and Hamburg, Germany.
I was awarded the National Travelling Fellowship of Great Britain and Ireland, undertaking further fellowship training at the Schubert-Martin Inflammatory Bowel Disease Center in advanced inflammatory bowel disease and pouch surgery. I later joined the colorectal team at Christchurch Hospital as International Fellow in recurrent rectal and advanced pelvic cancer, working with internationally recognised pioneers in the field.
I completed Royal College accreditation for independent diagnostic and therapeutic colonoscopy and was awarded JAG certification. In addition to my extensive experience in advanced minimally invasive surgery, I am recognised as a pioneer in robotic general, hernia and colorectal surgery, particularly in complex cancer procedures. In recognition of my work and achievements, I was appointed Colorectal Cancer Lead at East Suffolk and North Essex NHS Foundation Trust.
Following my consultant appointment in 2014, I was also appointed Lead for Surgical Teaching and Medical Education at East Suffolk and North Essex NHS Foundation Trust, supporting surgical training and promoting high standards of patient-centred care.
