About me

Dr Lokesh Wijesekera qualified in medicine from St Bartholomews and the Royal London Hospital school of medicine and dentistry (University of London) in 2001 and subsequently he undertook neurology training at Kings College Hospital London and research at the institute of Psychiatry (Kings College London), after completing his general medical postgraduate training. He then completed specialist training in Clinical Neurophysiology at the National Hospital for Neurology and Neurosurgery Queen Square, Great Ormond Street hospital and Kings College Hospital. In 2013, he was appointed as a consultant neurophysiologist jointly at Ipswich hospital NHS trusts and Cambridge University Hospital NHS trust and is the clinical lead for neurophysiology at Ipswich.

Dr Wijesekera has published several articles on natural history and clinical aspects of motor neurone disease in highly respected peer-reviewed journals such as ‘Neurology’, ‘Brain’ and ‘Nature Reviews’. He also has experience of working in phase 3 and phase 1 clinical trials

Areas of interest

As a neurophysiology consultant, his work is largely diagnostic and involves performing and interpretation of electrodiagnostic tests for complaints such as numbness (and other abnormalities in sensation), pain, weakness, muscle fatigue, muscle wasting, muscle twitching, symptoms due to trapped nerves and providing prognosis for traumatic nerve injuries;
Nerve conduction and electromyography (EMG) studies in diagnosis neuromuscular disorders (e.g.,carpal tunnel syndrome, ulnar neuropathy, nerve root entrapment, peripheral nerve injuries, myopathies, myasthenia gravis and motor neurone disease);
sub-specialist interest is in electrodiagnostic testing in Amyotrophic LateralSclerosis (Motor neurone disease);
Other electrophysiological diagnostic tests forthe nervous system such as Electroencephalography (EEG) and Evoked potentials(EPs), which are currently only offered at his NHS base hospitals.
