About me

Dr Miell studied endocrinology at three of the major international centres; St Bartholomew’s Hospital, London, University Hospital, Geneva and King’s College London. He qualified in 1982 and was awarded DM in 1990. As a Wellcome Graduate and subsequently Advanced Fellow he ran a large research group at King’s funded by grants from the MRC, Wellcome Trust, Fetal Medicine Foundation, Linbury Trust and the KCL JRC. In 1996 he was appointed Senior Lecturer (KCL) and Consultant Physician (University Hospital Lewisham and King’s College). He has over 100 peer reviewed papers, reviews and book chapters and was granted Fellowship of the Royal College of Physicians of both London and Edinburgh in 1999.

In his current post he has developed the Endocrine services at Lewisham and directs the Metabolic Medicine Unit. He continues acute on-call medicine leading a firm of junior trainees in General Medicine and Endocrinology. He combines this with his role as Divisional Director of Acute and Emergency Medicine. Director of Specialty Medicine, Pathology and Radiology. Since 2014 he has also been appointed to the role of Associate Clinical Dean for King’s College School of Medicine and is responsible for undergraduate training in 8 teaching campuses throughout South London, Kent, Surrey and Sussex. He has continued to be a major provider of undergraduate teaching, and has recently authored a text book of endocrinology which appears on the reading lists of major medical schools in the UK, US and many other countries.

He speaks regularly at regional, national and international meetings including recent “Meet the Professor” sessions for both the American and British Endocrine Society meetings. He is an examiner for the Royal College of Physicians and for KCL and regularly referees papers for Endocrine and general journals. In addition he is a Regional Specialty Adviser in Endocrinology for the Royal College, and a member of the RCP Specialty Examination Board (Diabetes and Endocrinology). His commitment to medicine has been recognised by the Department of Health with a National Clinical Excellence award.
