About me
My area of speciality is general practice - working on a broad range of mild-to-moderate emotional problems. The first half of my career, was spent practicing in GP surgeries across South West London, and the latter half in private practice in New York and London.
I was trained in humanistic, cognitive-behavioural, and psychodynamic methods, and later specialised in the Cognitive Therapies - for short-term, and life-long problems. My practice draws from a range of useful, proven, ideas and methods (e.g. Schema-Focused-Therapy, stoicism, existential psychology), and I keep up to date with research. Taken together, these approaches emphasise that: we should seek to change only that which is in our power to do so, and adapt to all else; that it is generally the view we take of things that defeats us rather than the things in themselves; and that the good life comes from engaging with whatever brings a true sense of purpose. Therapeutic work is largely about understanding and undoing negative patterns or blind spots that prevent us from realising all of this.
Over the years, I have developed a nuanced sense of psychological therapies – which approaches work best for particular people and problems – and a healthy respect for the limits of psychological explanations and interventions. I have a strong record of people finding me easy to talk to, and my approach to be clear, practical and effective.
