About me

I am a Consultant General, Hepato-Pancreatico-Biliary (HPB) and Hernia Surgeon based in Manchester, with my NHS practice at Manchester University NHS Foundation Trust. I am also the Director of The Gallstone Clinic at Spire Manchester Hospital. I provide high-quality elective and emergency general surgery and work as part of the regional HPB service, specialising in the investigation and management of gallstones, gallbladder disease and pancreatitis.

Alongside my clinical work, I am honoured to serve as President of the Association of Surgeons of Great Britain and Ireland (ASGBI) and was a member of the Surgical Specialty Board in General Surgery for the Royal College of Surgeons of Edinburgh. These roles reflect my commitment to professional leadership, high standards of surgical care and the ongoing development of the general surgical workforce across the UK and Ireland.

I am an Expert Reviewer for BUPA in the management of gallstones, gallbladder surgery, abdominal hernias, abdominal pain and adhesions, and an Expert Reviewer for BMJ Best Practice for gallstones, acute cholecystitis and acute cholangitis. This work ensures that patients and clinicians have access to clear, evidence-based guidance for common and complex general surgical conditions.

My private practice is based at Spire Manchester Hospital, a modern, well-equipped facility with state-of-the-art critical care support available for higher-risk patients, ensuring that care is delivered in a safe, high-quality clinical environment.

I graduated with First Class Honours in Biochemistry from the University of Birmingham, and with Honours in Medicine from the University of Manchester. I was awarded a Doctorate of Medicine for my research into sepsis, and completed higher surgical training in the North West Deanery and undertook an advanced HPB and Liver Transplant Fellowship in Leeds.

I started my Consultant career as an HPB surgeon in Nottingham before returning to Leeds as a Consultant Pancreato-Biliary and Laparoscopic Surgeon for 5 years. I returned to Manchester in 2018 to lead the General Surgical Team and improve the management of Emergency General Surgical patients in the Manchester. This broad training underpins a practice grounded in technical excellence, sound clinical judgement and patient-centred care.

My clinical interests include advanced laparoscopic (keyhole) gallbladder and bile duct surgery, open and laparoscopic hernia repair, the investigation and management of abdominal pain, and pancreatic disorders. I have a particular interest in day-case gallbladder surgery and in improving the overall patient experience, from first consultation through to recovery.

I am actively involved in clinical research and national quality improvement, serving as Principal Investigator on randomised clinical trials and leading local and national initiatives to improve standards of care. As Manchester Lead for the Royal College of Surgeons of England CHOLEQuIC programme, I have helped deliver meaningful improvements in the quality and experience of emergency gallbladder surgery for patients.

I am deeply committed to medical education and to training the next generation of surgeons, and I regularly contribute to national and international teaching and professional development.

Outside of work, I enjoy cooking, travel, fine wine and racket sports, and have recently returned to golf with renewed enthusiasm.
