About me

Mr Simon Monkhouse is a Consultant Upper GI & Laparoscopic Surgeon. He provides the full range of upper GI elective and emergency services including endoscopy, gallbladder surgery, hernia surgery, weight loss surgery and anti-reflux (heartburn) surgery. All procedures are carried out using the laparoscopic “key-hole”approach.

Mr Monkhouse was the recipient of the "Your Care Matters: improving the patient experience" award at the SASH Annual Staff Awards of Excellence 2015. He has also received two national certificates of excellence for high standards of patient care (2017 & 2018).


Mr Monkhouse studied at the University of Cambridge and was awarded prizes for academic distinction, including the Whitby Scholarship for top 1st. During his training he was awarded the prestigious, “Trainee of the Year” in 2010 and 2011. After training, he spent time in Newcastle doing a dedicated bariatric surgery fellowship. Now an established consultant since 2014, he continues to strive for excellence.

Professional memberships include the Association of Laparoscopic Surgeons (ALS), theAssociation of Upper GI Surgeons (AUGIS) and the British Obesity and Metabolic Surgery Society (BOMSS).
