About me

John Watkinson is a General ENT Surgeon who has considerable experience in treating a wide range of Ear, Nose & Throat conditions. He has a special interest in Head & Neck and Thyroid and Parathyroid surgery (including minimally invasive techniques).
He qualified from the Royal Free Hospital, University of London in 1979, and trained in ENT, Head and Neck and Plastic Surgery at Guys Hospital and The Royal Marsden. He has Fellowships in General Surgery and Otolaryngology together with an MSc in Nuclear Medicine and MS in Surgery. He is an elected member (by thesis) of the American Triological Society, as well as the American Head & Neck Society. He held visiting professorships at both Johns Hopkins Hospital in Baltimore, and Duke in Carolina, USA before completing his training with a further Plastics Fellowship at Canniesburn Hospital, Glasgow

He was a Consultant Head and Neck and Thyroid surgeon at the Queen Elizabeth Hospital, University of Birmingham NHS Trust (1992 – 2017), and recently Consultant Thyroid Surgeon at The Royal Marsden Hospital, Chelsea, London (2016 – 2017). He is currently Honorary Paediatric Head and Neck and Thyroid Surgeon at Great Ormond Street Hospital (GOSH), Locum Surgeon at Coventry & Warwickshire NHS Trust as well as being an Anatomy Lecturer at UCL London. He has a private practice at The Cromwell Hospital (where he is Business Director of the Endocrine MDT), and the Priory Hospital in Edgbaston, Birmingham.
John Watkinson qualified from the Royal Free Hospital (UCL) and trained in ENT, Head & Neck and Plastic Surgery at Guys and the Royal Marsden. He has Fellowships in General Surgery and Otolaryngology, a MSc in Nuclear Medicine and a MS in Surgery. From 1992-2017 he was a Consultant Head and Neck and Thyroid surgeon at the Queen Elizabeth Hospital, Birmingham where he had a large clinical and research thyroid practice. He also worked at the Royal Marsden Hospital, Chelsea, London (2016-2017). He has helped orchestrate or supervise over 40 Higher Degrees, and in 1998 was Hospital Surgical Doctor of the Year. He has been involved in National Guidelines, and organised the Birmingham Head and Neck course (1997-2006).

He is currently Honorary Paediatric Head and Neck and Thyroid Surgeon at Great Ormond Street Hospital (GOSH), Locum Surgeon at Coventry & Warwickshire NHS Trust, Business Director of the Endocrine MDT at the BUPA Cromwell Hospital as well as Senior Honorary Anatomy Demonstrator at UCL.
