About me

I am Joanna Armstrong, an Independent Speech and Language Therapist, specialising in working with adults with acquired communication disorders and swallowing difficulties. Communication difficulties can occur due to stroke, traumatic brain injury or neurological conditions such as Parkinson's Disease, MND and Multiple Sclerosis. These difficulties can affect every aspect of a person's life.

I work with the individual and their family to assess and manage communication disorders, providing tailored programmes or strategies and advice to meet the individual needs of the person. My approach is flexible, client-centred and evidence-based.

I am also certified in LSVT, a clinically-proven method of improving voice and speech in individuals with Parkinson's Disease.

I qualified as a Speech and Language Therapist with an MSc in Speech and Langauge Sciences from UCL in 2004. Since then, I have worked with adults with acquired neurological disorders and swallowing difficulties in a range of settings.

I worked for the NHS for nine years and in that time worked in community hospitals, on Stroke Units (acute and rehabilitation), medical wards, and in the community, visiting nursing homes, residential homes and private homes.

I feel that communication is one of the most important parts of who we are and how we participate in life. It is my aim to help people get the most out of communicating day-to-day, increasing their confidence and improving their quality of life.

I am a member of the RCSLT, HCPC and ASLTIP.
