About me
I am a specialist Orthopaedic surgeon who exclusively performs hip and knee surgery with particular interest in joint replacement. The ethos of my practice is to provide high quality, patient centred care while tailoring the treatment to each individual patient, based on the best possible evidence, which may include surgical or non-operative treatment.
I completed my basic surgical training in East Anglia and the Midlands, before moving to the North East for my specialist training in orthopaedics and trauma. I undertook two fellowships working with eminent surgeons in distinguished centres of excellence. The first fellowship was in Auckland, New Zealand pioneering in hip & knee replacement and revision hip & knee replacement. The second fellowship was in Bristol, UK to further cement my joint replacement experience and pelvic reconstructive surgery. I took up a consultant post in Sunderland Royal Hospital in January 2011.
My main interest is performing hip & knee replacement surgery. My 10 year results published by National Joint Registry UK (NJR UK 2021) shows that my results are amongst the best performing surgeons in the country for outcomes and revision rate (re-operation rate) following total hip replacements and total knee replacements. Whilst no surgical intervention can guarantee a successful outcome every time, I am pleased to see that the Patient Related Outcome Measure (PROMs) data published by NJR UK 2021 shows majority of my patients were very satisfied with their outcomes as indicated by their PROMS score.
My other interests include revision hip and knee replacement surgery and Knee Arthroscopy (Key hole surgery). I also have interest in reconstructive surgery following pelvis fracture and complex limb fractures.
I am also an active participant in Surgical Education/Training for Orthopaedic Specialist Registrar's in the North East. I am a member of the Specialist Training Committee for trauma & orthopaedics and I am a qualified instructor for AO Principles and Advanced course. I also teach in other regional and national Orthopaedic courses.
My outpatient clinics in Spire Washington Hospital are on Friday evenings and Monday & Wednesday afternoons.
