About me

I am a neurosurgeon with specialist expertise in the treatment of vascular disorders of the brain and spine. I currently perform the largest number of operations on arteriovenous malformations and aneurysms annually in the UK.

I lead a large research team investigating ways to improve the surgical and medical treatment of these conditions and also publish more scientific articles in this field annually than anyone else in the UK. I have been awarded grants by all major funders including the European Union, Innovate UK, EPSRC, MRC, NIHR as well as having a track record of collaborating with industry. I am the President of the British Neurovascular Group and a member of the Society of British Neurological Surgeons Research Committee.

Neurovascular Conditions
o aneurysms
o arteriovenous malformations
o dural AV fistulas
o cavernomas
o moya moya disease.
These represent some of the most technically challenging disorders in the nervous system for microsurgery. Their treatment draws on a wide range of different skill sets, which I also use in the treatment of other conditions of the brain and spine. These include:

Trigeminal neuralgia
o Trigeminal neuralgia is a condition frequently caused by compression of a nerve by an artery. My technical skills in microsurgery and blood vessels are ideally suited to this type of surgery

Hydrocephalus.
o Haemorrhage can also lead to hydrocephalus (accumulation of fluid on the brain) and I therefore have extensive experience in shunt surgery and have one of the larger experiences of recruiting patients to shunt studies in the world.
