About me
I am a specialist cataract and vitreoretinal surgeon. I hold a substantive Consultant NHS post in Hereford County Hospital since January 2013. I studied medicine at the National and Capodistrian University of Athens. I then trained in Internal Medicine at the Nassau University Medical Center (NY, USA). Following this, I had my core Ophthalmology training at the Red Cross General Hospital in Athens, Greece. I became a fellow of the European Board of Ophthalmology in 2009 (FEBOphth, Paris).
I am happy to see BUPA patients and assess them for cataract surgery either with standard or premium intraocular lenses.
In addition, I had extensive Ophthalmology training at the Royal Liverpool University Hospital where I completed successfully two fellowships.
Vitreoretinal Fellowship:
Entire range of vitreoretinal disorders and surgery. Vitrectomies using state-of-the-art latest equipment for:
- Retinal detachment repair
- Macular hole surgery
- Epiretinal membrane peeling
- Vitrectomy for cataract complications and
- Scleral buckle surgery which is the conventional method for retinal detachment repair.
I have also gained extensive experience in complex cataract surgery. This includes all cases where cataract surgery is not straightforward for different reasons including previous eye trauma causing traumatic cataracts or cases where the lens of the eye is unstable (i.e. pseudoexfoliation syndrome).
Medical Retina Fellowship:
Medical retinal conditions including:
- Age Related Macular Degeneration (ARMD): a condition affecting mostly elderly patients causing central visual loss
- Diabetic Retinopathy (DR) associated with long standing ophthalmic diabetic changes affecting vision
- Retinal Vein Occlusion (RVO) which is a condition associated with interruption of normal blood drainage from the back of the eye (retina)
- Other less common medical retina conditions (Central Serous Retinopathy, non-ARMD related choroidal neovascularization).
I have extensive experience treating all above conditions with the latest antiVascular Endothelial Growth Factor (antiVEGF) intravitreal injections; intraocular lasering or even retinal surgery in advanced cases.
Areas of interest
cataract surgery; vitreoretinal surgery; medical retina; age related macular degeneration; retinal vascular diseases
