About me

Why should you see Miss Maino?
1) Internationally renowned strabismus expert for children and adults. Other surgeons are paediatric ophthalmologists who do simple strabismus procedures or adult strabismologists who don't see children. The Squint Queen does only strabismus surgery to the highest standard.

2) 99% success rate vs a national standard of 80%

3) Key-hole technique means faster recovery and most importantly avoid scarring which might compromise future eye surgery (glaucoma, cataract). Other surgeons don't offer this.

4) Unique expertise in complex surgery, especially if the measurements vary in different eye positions (incomitant strabismus, near exotropia, distance esotropia, myopic strabismus, convergence excess). Other surgeons just aim for compromise or simply refuse to take on such cases.

Miss Maino (aka ' the Squint Queen') is an internationally renowned Consultant Ophthalmologist with extensive expertise in treating adult and paediatric ocular motility problems (double vision, strabismus (squint), abnormal head posture) with surgical, medical and optical treatments. Miss Maino has also a special interest in diagnosing and treating acquired problems in children and adults (e.g. caused by myopia, thyroid eye disease, direct trauma, road accidents, stroke, cancer treatment) both in the field of eye movement and perception of images.

National positions: Global committee, Royal College of Ophthalmologists, London.

International positions: President Elect, European Board of Ophthalmology (2025-2027), Vice President, Digital Education Committee, American Academy Pediatric Ophthalmology and Strabismus (2025 - present), Examiner for FEBOS-SP diploma (an internationally recongnised marker of excellence in the field of strabismus surgery), European Strabismus Association (2024 - present)

Miss Maino studied Medicine at University of Bari, Italy, obtaining a first class honours degree in 1998. She then worked as Glaucoma Research Fellow at Moorfields Eye Hospital, London in 1999-2000, before completing specialist training in Manchester (2001-2008). In 2008, she undertook an internationally renowned fellowship in Strabismus and Paediatric Ophthalmology at Moorfields Eye Hospital. She started working as Consultant at Stepping Hill Hospital in 2009 where she has been appointed to develop and lead a specialist Strabismus and Paediatric service. Miss Maino moved to Manchester Royal Eye Hospital in 2016.
She has published over 50 peer-reviewed papers in international journals. She is regularly invited to talk at national and international conferences, podcasts and interviews.
