About me
I am Counselling Psychology registered with the HCPC and chartered with the BPS. I am also an accredited CBT and EMDR psychotherapist.
Having worked in the NHS, charities and forensic settings, with a wide range of clients for over sixteen years, I now specialise in the treatment of anxiety disorders such as panic disorder, generalized anxiety, post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD), complex PTSD (CPTSD) with particular attention to attachment trauma, obsessive compulsive disorder (OCD), phobias, social anxiety, and health anxiety, as well as depression, addictions and drug and alcohol misuse, low self-esteem, childhood abuse, relationship problems and anger.
I am particularly neurodiversity aware, and when clinically relevant, discuss with clients the possibility of ADHD. From my experience working in addictions services, signposting clients for ADHD assessments has frequently made a significant difference in clients' recovery and understanding of themselves. Additionally, during my undergraduate studies, I worked in an autistic specialist service, which informs my inclusive approach to neurodiverse clients.
Many of my clients choose to have therapy with me as a male psychotherapist, with an interest in male psychology and mental health issues.
In general I work integratively, this means integrating different aspects and interventions from various types of therapy such as CBT, humanistic, existential counselling and psychodynamic approaches in order to suit the needs of my clients, taking into account their personalities, the way we relate and presenting issues.
I work collaboratively and have a humanistic philosophy. I believe that while I may be an expert in my field, clients are experts in themselves, so I listen empathically and place great emphasis on the therapeutic relationship.
I abide by the professional and ethical standards laid down by the BPS, HCPC, BABCP and BACP and have full DBS clearance.
I am originally from Venezuela, and so I am able to provide my services in Spanish if preferred.
MY QUALIFICATIONS AND TRAINING
My background is in Psychology (BSc Hon degree from 1998-2002) and later I completed a diploma in Integrative Counselling (2002-2004).
I have an MSc in Evolutionary Psychology which is useful for understanding the biological basis and the evolutionary reasons of why psychological problems develop.
I completed a post-graduate diploma in Cognitive Therapy for anxiety and depression as part of the NHS IAPT programme (improving access to psychological therapies) where I worked between 2009-2016.
