About me
Dr Joey Lai-Cheong is a UK-trained consultant dermatologist who has been practicing since 2004 exclusively in dermatology. He is on the specialist register of the General Medical Council and consults on all aspects of dermatology and sees adults, teenagers and children.
Dr Lai-Cheong works at the Circle Princess Margaret Hospital in Windsor, the Bridge Clinic in Maidenhead and the Spire Thames Valley Hospital near Wexham. He consults on all aspects of general and paediatric dermatology and has expertise in skin cancer diagnosis and management, mole checks and mole removal, medical dermatology including eczema, psoriasis and acne as well as dermatological surgery. He also treats patients with excessive sweating with botulinum toxin injections
In his early career, Joey studied medicine at the University of Newcastle upon Tyne, where he graduated with the Goyder Memorial Commendation in Medicine and Surgery. He combined his medical studies with a Bachelor of Medical Sciences with Honours and was awarded the George Smart prize for being the top performing research student.
After completing his postgraduate diploma in general internal medicine (also known as the Membership of the Royal College of Physicians, MRCP, a pre-requisite for all UK-trained specialist physicians), he started his dermatology training at the St John’s Institute of Dermatology based at Guy’s and St Thomas’s Hospitals in London. During that time he was awarded the prestigious Wellcome Trust Research Fellowship and conducted research in skin science in the field of focal adhesion and integrin biology.
In 2010 he was awarded a PhD in Skin Science from the University of London and subsequently became the first National Institute for Health Research (NIHR) Lecturer in Cutaneous Medicine at St John’s Institute of Dermatology. Joey also trained in Children and Adolescent Dermatology at the Children’s Memorial Hospital in Chicago, USA under Professor Amy Paller, a world authority in Paediatric Dermatology.
Joey has contributed to the field of dermatology by publishing over 50 peer-reviewed medical articles and over 100 conference abstracts in local, national and international meetings. Notable medical journals in which he has published include the New England Journal of Medicine (the highest ranked medical journal in the world), Nature Medicine, Journal of Investigative Dermatology (the highest ranked dermatology journal) and American Journal of Pathology. He has also contributed to numerous book chapters including the Skin Anatomy chapter in the 2015 and 2020 edition of the world famous Gray’s Anatomy textbook.
