About me

Professor Ahmed El-Missiry is a Consultant Psychiatrist with specialist expertise in General Adult Psychiatry and Addiction Psychiatry. He works as an inpatient Consultant Psychiatrist at Nightingale Hospital, alongside roles within Crisis and Home Treatment services and personality disorder services in North London. Earlier in his career, he oversaw the largest drug and alcohol detoxification unit in South East England.

Professor El-Missiry completed psychiatric training in the UK at Guy's and St Thomas' NHS Foundation Trust and King's College London. He became a Member of the Royal College of Psychiatrists in 2004 and was elected Fellow of the Royal College of Psychiatrists in 2020. He also completed an international addiction medicine competence degree in 2005 and was elected Fellow of the American Psychiatric Association in 2017.

He is a Professor of Psychiatry at a World Health Organization Collaborative Centre for Training and Research and served as the Royal College of Psychiatrists' Regional Representative in Addiction Psychiatry from 2010 to 2022.

His clinical interests focus particularly on the relationship between substance misuse, mental illness and offending behaviour. He has expertise in the assessment and management of depression, anxiety disorders, obsessive compulsive disorder (OCD), post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD), ADHD, psychosis, personality disorders, addictions and acute psychiatric crises.

Professor El-Missiry has published more than 45 peer-reviewed academic articles across multiple areas of psychiatry and received the EPA 2005 Award for General Edification, Enlightenment and Continuity of Psychiatric Sciences with Other Disciplines in recognition of his academic contributions.
