About me

Melanie’s undergraduate training was at Cambridge University and the Royal Free Hospital, London. After graduation in 1997 she underwent thorough and comprehensive training in all aspects of ophthalmology at St Thomas’ Hospital, London and as a Specialist Registrar at Oxford Eye Hospital. She also completed 2 years of intensive research on cataract outcomes leading to a higher degree at Great Ormond Street Hospital/University College London. Melanie also trained intensively for 2 years in eyelid and tear drainage surgery. This advanced sub speciality training was at Oxford Eye and Stoke Mandeville Hospitals.

Melanie Chak was appointed as Consultant Ophthalmologist to the Great Western Hospital, Swindon to lead the oculoplastics service. She provides a comprehensive service for patients with disorders of the eyelids and tear drainage systems. She also provides small incision cataract surgery and leads clinics in acute and general eye conditions.

Research interests

Miss Chak has published widely mostly on her research on cataracts and oculoplastics disorders. She has presented nationally and internationally including at the British Oculoplastic Surgeons Society and the European Society of Ophthalmic Plastic and Reconstructive Surgery meetings.
