Richard Sainsbury qualified in 1977 from University of Newcastle Upon Tyne Medical School and obtained a MD with distinction in 1986.
Richard was Consultant Breast Surgeon at Southampaton University Hospitals NHS Trust and IOW NHS Primary Care Trust having taken up the post in the summer of 2007. He moved there from Royal Free and University College Medical School London where he had been Senior Lecturer, then Reader and Honorary Consultant Surgeon and Head of Breast Services at UCH since 2000. He was previously a Consultant Surgeon in Huddersfield for 12 years.
He has now retired from NHS practice and provides care from Harley Street, Chiswick Dignostic Centre and Spire Southampton.
He has retained his ongoing research programme at UCL concerning the mechanisms of breast cancer, and he was involved in advising government bodies on the optimisation of breast services. He has written several books and over 200 scientific papers on breast cancer.
