About me
Professor Clive Handler BSc (Hons), MD, FRCP, FESC, FACC is an experienced senior NHS consultant cardiologist working at the Royal Free Hospital and he is an Honorary Consultant Cardiologist at Guy's and St Thomas' Hospital. He is an Honorary Clinical Professor, Division of Medicine, UCL.
All his fees are agreed with BUPA and are within BUPA reimbursement rates.
He graduated from Guy's Hospital Medical School and was awarded a MRC Scholarship to study for a BSc Honours degree in Pharmacology. He trained in cardiology and general medicine in major London teaching hospitals and in the USA. He was awarded his MD research degree from the University of London on "Exercise testing after myocardial infarction".
Professor Handler has particular expertise and experience in the diagnosis and treatment of complex and unexplained breathlessness, angina, chest pain, palpitation, dizzy turns, loss of consciousness, high blood pressure and high cholesterol. He is an national expert in pulmonary hypertension.
He is an examiner and tutor at UCL Medical School, and a member of the admissions panel for King's College Medical School.
He has written or edited 13 textbooks and published numerous papers. He is a member of the FLARRE research group at UCL, a founder and faculty member of the annual UCL international vascular biology conference, the founder and chairman of the St Paul's School Medical Conference for widening participation in medicine, and a Freeman of the City of London.
He is an invited member of the NICE expert panel on pulmonary hypertension. He reviews grant applications submitted to the Medical Research Council. He examines postgraduate degrees at UCL and other universities. He is asked for his expert opinion in medico-legal cases.
He is an elected Fellow of the Royal College of Physicians, the European Society of Cardiology and the American College of Cardiology.
Areas of interest
Professor Handler has extensive experience in investigating and treating chest pain; high blood pressure; breathlessness; palpitations; dizzy turns; loss of consciousness; prevention of heart disease (high cholesterol, exercise, management of stress, and diet). He is consulted for second opinions to see whether heart surgery or medical treatment are needed for patients with coronary heart disease or valve conditions.
He has particular expertise in the diagnosis and management of pulmonary hypertension, breathlessness and chest pain.
