About me
Mr Pankaj Agarwal is a highly experienced Consultant Ophthalmologist in Edinburgh, specialising in the diagnosis, management, and treatment of glaucoma. He graduated in medicine from the University of Kolkata, India, in 1997, and completed both his basic and higher specialist ophthalmology training in Glasgow, where he also undertook a dedicated Fellowship in Glaucoma.
With over 15 years' experience as a UK consultant, Mr Agarwal has been a Consultant Ophthalmologist in Edinburgh since 2010 and currently serves as Clinical Lead for the Glaucoma Service in NHS Lothian, delivering specialist care to patients with complex and long?term eye conditions.

Mr Agarwal is recognised for his expertise in:
Glaucoma diagnosis and long?term management, Medical and surgical glaucoma treatments, Visual field testing and glaucoma monitoring, Shared?care glaucoma services

Mr Agarwal is an internationally published clinician?researcher with a strong academic background. He was the first ophthalmologist to publish evidence supporting the role of itraconazole in the treatment of fungal corneal ulcers, contributing to advances in corneal infection management.
He has played a key role in national and international research, including:
Member of the SIGN Glaucoma Guideline Development Group, Principal Investigator in major international clinical trials, including EAGLE and TAGS and Co?researcher in the University of Edinburgh team that developed SVOP (Saccadic Vector Optokinetic Perimetry), an innovative technology for visual field testing in glaucoma patients.
Publications, Teaching and Professional Recognition
Mr Agarwal has authored over 35 peer?reviewed publications in leading international ophthalmology journals and has co?authored a book chapter in his field. He is regularly invited to act as a peer reviewer for respected ophthalmic journals.
He is also a sought?after speaker and has delivered invited lectures at national and international ophthalmology conferences, sharing expertise in glaucoma care, service development, and clinical innovation.
Commitment to Patient Support and Awareness
Dedicated to improving patient outcomes beyond the clinic, Mr Agarwal founded the first glaucoma patient support group in Scotland in collaboration with the International Glaucoma Association (IGA). He continues to work actively on glaucoma awareness, education, and patient support, both within the UK and internationally.
