About me

Philippa Rust FRCS highly qualified and experienced in hand and wrist surgeon. She specialised in Hand Surgery early in her career, struck by the intricacy of the anatomy and the importance of the function to her patients' daily lives. She has particular interest in carpal tunnel syndrome, base of thumb arthritis, TFCC and wrist arthroscopy having done hundreds of these operations over the years, and researched and published in these areas. Further, she sees all related Hand and Wrist Surgery patients.

Philippa trained in London as an Orthopaedic surgeon, specialising in hand and wrist surgery, and completed a Plastic hand surgery fellowship at the Windsor Hand Clinic, Berkshire. She was also one of the first group to attain British Society for Surgery of the Hand Diploma of Hand Surgery. Philippa then headed to Australia to complete fellowships in Plastic microsurgery for the hand (Bernard O'Brien Institute, Melbourne) and in upper limb complex trauma and reconstruction (Princess Alexandra Hospital, Brisbane).
In Australia she gained expertise in surgical advances which reduce recovery time, including wrist arthroscopy. She is one of a few surgeons in Scotland performing this keyhole surgery.

Since 2010 Philippa has worked as a Consultant in Edinburgh, at Lothian Hand Surgery Unit, St John's Hospital, Livingston, and her practice is solely hand and wrist surgery. Her private practice is in Edinburgh, at Spire Shawfair Park and Edinburgh Nuffield Hospitals.

Personal interests

Philippa lives in Edinburgh with her husband and young son. They enjoy getting outdoors, especially hill-walking. Other interests include gardening, swimming and the theatre. She is also an enthusiastic member of a bookclub.

Awards received

Philippa has won prizes in UK and abroad for her MD research into the tissue engineering of bone and application in healing defects. She has also been awarded research grants in both UK and Australia.
