About me
Ms. Claudia Maizen is a leading Consultant Paediatric Orthopaedic Surgeon, internationally recognised for her expert care, surgical precision, and deep commitment to improving the lives of children with musculoskeletal conditions. Based at The Royal London Hospital - part of Barts Health NHS Trust - she provides comprehensive orthopaedic care for infants, children, and adolescents, delivering evidence-based, child-centred treatment in a compassionate and supportive environment.
With a specialist focus on paediatric trauma and neuromuscular conditions, including cerebral palsy, Ms. Maizen is highly regarded for her multidisciplinary approach to diagnosis and treatment. She also has extensive experience managing a wide spectrum of paediatric orthopaedic issues - from hip disorders like developmental dysplasia of the hip (DDH), Perthes disease, and slipped capital femoral epiphysis (SCFE), to lower limb deformities, foot and ankle conditions, and complex growth-related musculoskeletal problems.
Ms. Maizen is a firm advocate of minimally invasive care, placing significant emphasis on non-surgical treatment options wherever appropriate. Her approach is family-focused and transparent - she takes time during consultations to ensure parents and carers are fully informed about the diagnosis and available treatment pathways, always prioritising the well-being and comfort of the child.
Where surgery is necessary, she utilises the latest techniques including guided growth surgery and advanced deformity correction, tailoring each intervention to the child's age, development, and long-term needs.
Ms. Maizen completed her medical training at the University Children's Hospital Graz in Austria - a leading European centre for paediatric care - where she trained under Professor Reinhard Graf, pioneer of the ultrasound-based hip screening method for infants. Her early research into DDH led to the co-authorship of the influential textbook called Sonography of the Infant's Hip. She has since become a global leader in this field.
Her academic contributions include numerous peer-reviewed publications, book chapters, and involvement as principal investigator in international multi-centre studies. Ms. Maizen also acts as a reviewer and subspecialty editor for high-impact orthopaedic journals.
Deeply passionate about improving global access to quality paediatric orthopaedic care, Ms. Maizen has worked extensively in Africa and Mongolia, where she provides surgical treatment and educational support to local healthcare professionals. Her goal is to raise standards of care through hands-on training and collaborative education - work that reflects her broader dedication to healthcare equity and global paediatric health.
She is a founding and board member of the International Interdisciplinary Consensus Committee for DDH Evaluation (ICODE), and serves as Chair of the Education Committee, leading international training initiatives in paediatric hip ultrasound and DDH management. She also organises the Graf Hip Ultrasound Courses in London, supporting clinicians worldwide in refining their screening and diagnostic techniques.
Since joining The Royal London Hospital as a Consultant in 2010, Ms. Maizen has been instrumental in the development of its paediatric neuromuscular service, including a dedicated botulinum toxin (BTX) programme for children with cerebral palsy. Her leadership has helped shape a holistic, multidisciplinary care model that addresses every aspect of a child's physical development and mobility challenges.
From acute trauma to long-term orthopaedic care, Ms. Maizen is committed to delivering tailored treatment plans that promote healing, growth, and a return to everyday childhood activities. Her ability to combine surgical expertise with genuine empathy has earned her a trusted reputation among families and referring clinicians alike.
