How can therapy help during COVID-19?
Fear, worry, and stress are normal responses to any perceived or real threats and at times when we are faced with uncertainty or the unknown so it is perfectly normal and understandable that people are experiencing fear in the context of the COVID-19 pandemic. Not only are people having to cope with heightened feelings of fear and apprehension but they are also having to adjust the significant changes to their lives due to the enforced restrictions on their movements in order to support the nation’s efforts to contain and slow down the spread of the virus. People are having to cope with facing new realities such as working from home, temporary unemployment, home-schooling of children, and lack of physical contact with other family members, friends, and colleagues. Across the media, professional organisations, the government, and WHO websites there are techniques or activities that people can explore to stay well. Whilst the mind and body quickly adapt to stress through coping strategies that are helpful in the short-term, if allowed to develop and become long-term those unhealthy negative mental, emotional or physical responses become more intensified and often progress to needing therapy to understand and unlearn their responses. Cognitive behaviour therapy (CBT) is a talking therapy which focuses on how your thoughts, beliefs and attitudes affect your feelings and behaviours therefore CBT is an effective solution to tackle mental, emotional and physical issues that are creating concern to your overall health/wellbeing.
