About me

I trained as a nephrologist and I am on the specialist register for Renal and General Internal Medicine.

I was appointed Consultant Physician and Nephrologist with an interest in undergraduate education at Lancashire Teaching Hospitals NHS Foundation Trust in 2007. In my NHS role I see patients with a wide variety of kidney problems.

My subspecialty interest is kidney transplantation and I lead our transplant listing programme and see patients after transplantation.

I have had a lead role in education and have served as Associate Undergraduate Dean from 2011 to 2020.

I also have a strong research background and obtained a lecturer degree in Medicine with a thesis on small-vessel vasculitis. I have published 150+publications on a variety of topics in Renal Medicine. I have contributed two chapters to Oxford Textbook of Clinical Nephrology. I am Fellow of the American Society of Nephrology (FASN) and Distinguished Fellow of the European Renal Association (FERA). I am Honorary Clinical Professor.

In my private practice I see patients with chronic kidney disease of all stages except those on dialysis or close to needing dialysis. I also see patients with difficult to control blood pressure or proteinuria (protein in the urine).

The COVID-19 situation has prompted some changes to my practice. I do clinics face to face, via video or via telephone. All new appointments are face to face so that I can examine the patient although on occasion a video appointment may suffice. For follow up I offer video appointments via BMI Healthcare or telephone or face to face, depending on the clinical situation and patient preference.

Due to the availability of video consultation technology I can now offer a second opinion for patients further away - to be able to do this I would need all relevant medical correspondence and laboratory results and imaging sent to me prior to the appointment.

I usually see patients on a Tuesday afternoon at BMI Lancaster.
