About me
I am a Consultant Gastroenterologist and Hepatologist based in Derby, providing private care at Nuffield Health Derby Hospital and NHS care at Royal Derby Hospital. I specialise in the diagnosis and treatment of conditions affecting the digestive system and liver, and I am dual-accredited on the specialist register for both Gastroenterology and Hepatology.
I graduated from the University of Nottingham in 1997 and completed specialist training in Gastroenterology and Hepatology across the Trent region. I subsequently undertook advanced training in liver disease at the Liver Transplant Unit at St James's Hospital, Leeds, where I developed expertise in the management of complex and advanced liver conditions. I was appointed as a Consultant at Royal Derby Hospital in June 2009.
I diagnose and treat a wide range of gastrointestinal and liver disorders, including inflammatory bowel disease (Crohn's disease and ulcerative colitis), coeliac disease, gastrointestinal bleeding, abdominal pain, changes in bowel habit, and acute and chronic liver diseases. My practice includes the assessment and management of both routine and complex digestive and liver conditions.
I am highly experienced in endoscopic procedures, including upper gastrointestinal endoscopy (gastroscopy), colonoscopy, flexible sigmoidoscopy and ERCP. I also perform FibroScan assessments, a non-invasive test used to measure liver stiffness and evaluate liver health.
Alongside my clinical practice, I am actively involved in medical education, training and research. I have been an Honorary Assistant Professor at the University of Nottingham School of Medicine since 2014 and currently serve as the East Midlands North Gastroenterology Training Programme Director. My research interests include coeliac disease, hepatitis C, non-alcoholic fatty liver disease and primary biliary cholangitis, and I have published extensively in these areas. I also helped lead the Derby liver service in achieving IQILS accreditation, a national quality award from the Royal College of Physicians recognising excellence in liver care.
My aim is to provide expert, evidence-based care in a friendly and approachable manner. I take time to listen to my patients, explain diagnoses and treatment options clearly, and work collaboratively to ensure that every patient feels informed, supported and confident throughout their treatment journey.
