About me
Medical and Surgical Training
Paul qualified in Medicine from the University of Manchester in 1996 having previously completed a BSc from the University of St Andrews. His post graduate basic surgical training was undertaken through Bart's and the Royal London surgical rotations. Following this he entered higher surgical training in Trauma and Orthopaedics in the North East Thames region on the University College London rotation. This training involved working as a Specialist Registrar at several of the regions university teaching hospitals including the Royal National Orthopaedic Hospital, the Middlesex and University College Hospital London, Great Ormond Street Hospital, Bart's and the Royal London Hospitals where he worked for many renowned experts in their field.
He became a Fellow of the Royal College of Surgeons (FRCS Tr & Orth) in 2005 and completed his higher surgical training in 2007. He spent one year fellowship with Professor Judet at his famous orthopaedic unit in Garches. Following this he spent two and a half years working as a consultant in the largest public hospital in Abu Dhabi before returning to London in 2010 to join Bart's and the Royal London Hospital in 2010.
Specialist Fellowship Training
Paul spent one year on fellowship in Paris working for Professor Judet, a leading professor of orthopaedic surgery in France. This active department with two professors in lower limb surgery takes national and international referrals for complex primary joint replacements, revision joint replacements, pelvic and acetabular fractures and the complications of fractures, including infection and mal-union.
During his fellowship operating with Professor Judet he learnt and practised new techniques and gained a lot of experience in hip arthroplasty through the minimally invasive anterior approach including hip resurfacing and revision hip surgery. He gained experience in osteotomies for early treatment of osteoarthritis of the knee and more generally for deformity correction.
In addition to his clinical responsibilities he also had a formal research position under the auspices of the French orthopaedic association (SOFCOT) and the University of Paris. During his time at Garches he published articles and several presentations on subjects including hip resurfacing and the anterior approach to the hip; valgus closing wedge osteotomy to the knee and gait analysis in ankle arthroplasty.
Previous Consultant Experience
Paul's time in Abu Dhabi was spent working as a consultant at the Sheikh Khalifa Medical City which was managed by the Cleveland Clinic and is the largest public hospital in Abu Dhabi and a tertiary referral centre for the United Arab Emirates. His busy orthopaedic practise focused on knee sports injuries, all forms of knee replacement surgery and hip replacement surgery in particular managing cases with severe deformity and arthritis in a young age group. The trauma surgery was often complex due to the large proportion of patients with severe injuries. He therefore gained considerable experience in lower limb trauma surgery and in particular pelvic and acetabular reconstructive surgery.
Areas of interest
Arthroscopic knee surgery and knee sports injuries including ligament reconstructions; Partial and total primary knee replacements and revision knee replacements; Primary total hip replacement including minimally invasive techniques; Complex hip reconstruction and revision hip replacement; Pelvic and acetabular trauma surgery; Complex trauma surgery to lower limb
