About me

Mr Dave Duffy (GMC no. 4122106) is a specialist knee surgeon with over 13 years of experience and is recognised as an expert in his field. Alongside his special interest in all forms of joint replacement surgery of the knee, he also has vast knowledge and experience in ACL reconstruction and arthroscopic surgery. Regularly treating elite and professional athletes, including Premier League footballers, he has a particular expertise in sports injuries. These include knee ligament reconstruction, meniscal (cartilage) surgery and isolated chondral injuries
He is one of only 5% of knee surgeons in the UK performing more than 50 partial knee replacements per year.

After graduating in Medicine at Newcastle University, Dave spent several years training as a junior doctor in Australia. He spent part of this time in the outback of Queensland and worked in the Emergency Department of the mining town of Mount Isa. From here he ventured to the isolated Aboriginal reserves of Mornington Island (off the north coast of Australia) and Doomage, as the lone medical practitioner – this he describes as a true life-changing experience.

Following further Intensive Care training in Brisbane, Dave returned to the UK to pursue his passion for Orthopaedic Surgery and undertook specialist training in Yorkshire. His practice is now largely based in Harrogate (where he has been the Clinical Lead for Orthopaedics since 2016), and he has private consulting rooms at both BMI The Duchy Hospital in Harrogate, and the Nuffield Hospital in Leeds.

At the heart of Dave’s practice is a commitment to patient communication and care. Something he feels should be taken for granted is providing patients with a clear and concise explanation of their diagnosis –– plus all the treatment options available, as well as understanding their individual goals and being able to manage expectations. All of which he feels are fundamental parts of patient satisfaction.

His approach is directed at identifying the underlying cause to any knee pathology. This enables a treatment plan to address all aspects of knee function in order to optimise the results of treatment. The support of specialist physiotherapists, plus swift and high quality investigations help to achieve this goal. Having close links with high calibre specialist health professionals (Radiologists & Physiotherapists) is also essential for this bespoke and holistic approach.

Years of dedication to his field have resulted in 1000’s of successful knee operations being performed. He is the lead Harrogate surgeon for the multicentre national QIST study, a programme to drive improvements in outcomes for knee replacement surgery. This has been recognised in being named ‘Infection Prevention and Control Initiative of the Year’ at the 2019 HSJ Patient Safety Awards.
