Dr Baghai-Ravary qualified at King’s College School of Medicine in 1996 (Bachelor of Medicine & Surgery, University of London). During his specialist training in Respiratory and General Medicine (London), he published clinical research on chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD) and developed subspecialty experience in occupational lung disease, suppurative lung disease, non-invasive ventilation, pleural disease and critical care. He was a recognised Bronchoscopy Trainer for specialist trainees and independently reported Sleep Studies and Full Lung Function Tests. In 2009, he was appointed a Substantive Consultant post in East Kent Hospitals University Foundation Trust and he has since focused his clinical care on people of his local community (East Kent). He has led on improvements in many areas of care including Lung Cancer, COPD, Lung Function Testing, Hospital antibiotic protocols, high-dependency COVID-19 care, Venous thrombo-embolism (Member of the Thrombosis Committee) and the use of steroid-sparing drugs in respiratory disease.
Dr Baghai-Ravary is a Chest Physician with a broad range of subspecialty experience. He delivers Respiratory Education, Training and Updates for GPs, junior doctors and medical students. As a Guardian of Safe Working, he has ensured that junior doctors are able to deliver safe patient care by supporting them at work, ensuring professional development and adequate rest. He is a current examiner in the Practical Assessment of Clinical Examination Skills (PACES) for the Royal College of Physicians (London), Lead and Trainer in Endobronchial Ultrasound with Transbronchial Needle Aspiration (EBUS-TBNA), a service he repatriated to East Kent from London (recognised in a Trust Outstanding Innovation Award). EBUS-TBNA is a technique used to accurately stage the extent of lung cancer and other lung diseases, by analysing cells from lymph nodes in the chest.
