About me
Professor R. M. Cervellione is a Consultant Paediatric Surgeon and Urologist with international recognition in paediatric and adolescent urological reconstruction. With nearly 20 years of consultant experience, he provides expert care for both common conditions and highly complex urological problems in children and young people.
He leads the nationally commissioned Bladder Exstrophy Unit at Royal Manchester Children's Hospital and is internationally recognised for his expertise in hypospadias surgery, including both primary repair and complex redo procedures following previous failed operations. He regularly receives referrals from across the UK and internationally to manage challenging reconstructive cases, supporting both patients and fellow specialists.
Professor Cervellione offers comprehensive care across the full spectrum of paediatric urology. His expertise includes the management of kidney and urinary tract conditions such as pelvi-ureteric junction (PUJ) obstruction, vesico-ureteric junction (VUJ) obstruction, vesico-ureteric reflux (VUR), and posterior urethral valves. He has extensive experience in managing daytime and nighttime urinary incontinence, including giggle incontinence, providing tailored, child-centred treatment plans.
He also has a strong interest in adolescent urology, including the management of varicocele and post-pubertal hydrocele, offering age-appropriate care during this important stage of development.
In addition, he treats a wide range of common conditions that families frequently seek specialist advice for, including phimosis (in both children and adolescents), foreskin conditions, inguinal hernia, hydrocele, and umbilical hernia, providing clear guidance and effective treatment options, often with day-case surgery to support a smooth recovery.
Professor Cervellione is known for combining advanced surgical expertise with a calm, reassuring and family-focused approach, ensuring that children and their families feel fully informed and supported throughout their care.
He is an Honorary Professor at the University of Manchester and has authored over 75 peer-reviewed publications. His research interests include bladder exstrophy and varicocele. He is an invited lecturer and visiting surgeon internationally, contributing to education and surgical training worldwide.
He is also actively involved in charitable surgical missions in Vietnam and Africa, supporting children with complex urological conditions in resource-limited settings.
