About me

Mr Mughal is an experienced Consultant Orthopaedic Surgeon specialising in knee and hip surgery, with a particular focus on complex knee conditions and deformity correction. Born in Birmingham, he graduated in Medicine from Leeds University with Honours in Biochemistry and was awarded the prestigious William Macadam Prize in Medicine. He completed his surgical and specialist orthopaedic training in the West Midlands, followed by a dedicated Knee Fellowship in Derby, before being appointed as a Consultant at New Cross Hospital, Wolverhampton.
With more than 1,000 knee and hip replacements performed, Mr Mughal has extensive experience across all aspects of knee surgery. He has developed one of the largest specialist practices in the West Midlands for kneecap instability and has significant expertise in treating sports related knee injuries. His research includes publishing one of the world's largest series combining alignment and ligament surgery for recurrent kneecap dislocation, as well as widely adopted techniques for patellar realignment.
Mr Mughal is also highly experienced in deformity correction for both adolescents and adults, including knock knee, bow leg deformities and the complex condition known as miserable malalignment syndrome. He uses advanced computer based and 3D modelling techniques to plan personalised corrective surgery, aiming to preserve joints affected by early osteoarthritis. When combined with cartilage regeneration procedures, this approach enables him to offer a comprehensive and tailored treatment pathway.
He performs a large number of partial knee replacements, many of which can be carried out as day case procedures. These minimally invasive operations typically allow faster recovery and now offer durability comparable to total knee replacement in suitable patients.
