About me

Professor Matt Brookes is a Consultant Clinical Gastroenterologist working at the Royal Wolverhampton NHS Trust, where he has been the clinical lead for inflammatory bowel disease for 5 years until 2015. He was appointed as a consultant in 2009.
During his time in post he has facilitated a significant improvement in IBD research within the local network and more specifically his own trust. During his ten years as a consultant Gastroenterologist he has taken on the research lead role within his department and increased recruitment to clinical research trials from 30 patients per annum to over 400 patients in 2013 and 2019. He has been either chief investigator or local principle investigator on over 20 trials in the last 5 years.
He currently has 5 open interventional studies recruiting IBD patients to new drug therapy trials. He holds honorary academic positions at two local institutions, including an honorary chair at the University of Wolverhampton.
He has published over 70 academic papers in peer-reviewed press. He has supervised, or is currently supervising three post-graduate clinical fellows. His laboratory research has recently expanded, with the funding and development of a Gastroenterology academic research unit in collaboration with Wolverhampton University. This is co-led by Professor Brookes who coordinates Gastroenterology research activity within this unit.
He has received research funding of around £500,000 over the last 2 years.
He is the clinical speciality research lead for Gastroenterology within the West Midlands network.
Professor Brookes is the immediate past chair of the British Society of Gastroenterology research committee.
