About me
Dr Roberto Alonzi has a special interest in urological and gynaecological malignancies and is a consultant clinical oncologist at Mount Vernon Cancer Centre. Dr Alonzi trained at Guy’s and St Thomas’ hospitals in London and achieved a 1st Class honours BSc degree followed by MBBS in 1997. Following his general training and membership of the Royal College of Physicians, his specialist training took place in London at Hammersmith hospital, Charing Cross hospital and Mount Vernon Cancer Centre resulting in a Fellowship of the Royal College of Radiologists in 2004. Dr Alonzi studied for his research degree at the Gray Cancer Institute and University College London and was awarded an MD in 2008.
Dr Alonzi has a long experience in the treatment of prostate cancer, bladder cancer, gynaecological cancers and carcinoma of unknown primary. He has one of the largest brachytherapy practices in the UK and is a leading radiotherapist using all radiotherapy technologies including cyberknife, intensity modulated radiotherapy and image guidance. He also treats patients with systemic therapies such as chemotherapy, immunotherapy, hormonal therapy and targeted biological treatments, including new agents within the context of clinical trials.
Dr Alonzi’s has a major academic interest in the treatment of prostate cancer. These research interests include the development of biologically targeted image-guided precision radiotherapy using brachytherapy, salvage high dose rate brachytherapy for radio-recurrent prostate cancer, tumour oxygenation with the development of magnetic resonance based hypoxia imaging for targeted radiotherapy planning, the radiobiology of ultra-hypofractionation, focal and focussed therapy for prostate Cancer using high dose rate brachytherapy and stereotactic body radiotherapy and the use of radiation sensitizers in prostate cancer.
