About me

Prof Maher works on the Interstitial Lung Disease Unit at the Royal Brompton. He specialises in the diagnosis and treatment of fibrosing lung disease. His clinical interests include; idiopathic pulmonary fibrosis, sarcoidosis, lung disease associated with connective tissue disease, lymphangeiolyomyomatosis (LAM), histiocytosis X and hypersensitivity pneumonitis.

He is currently Chair of the Specialised Respiratory Medicine CRG working with the NHS Commissioning Board. He was an external expert for the NICE Pirfenidone Technology Appraisal.

He is approved to prescribe pirfenidone (Esbriet) and nintedinib (Ofev) in the treatment of idiopathic pulmonary fibrosis

Research interests

Dr Maher runs an active program of research. He is the Chief Investigator on a number of drug trials exploring new treatments for idiopathic pulmonary fibrosis. He also supervises a number of projects targeted at better understanding the causes of pulmonary fibrosis with a view to developing better diagnostic tests and new drug treatments/

Personal interests

Dr Maher is Senior Editor of the international respiratory journal Respirology. He is on the Editorial Board of the European Respiratory Journal and the European Respiratory Review.

Dr Maher has, in the last 5 years, authored over 100 papers and book chapters on idiopathic pulmonary fibrosis, sarcoidosis and connective tissue disease associated interstitial lung disease.
