About me
Andrew Sankey is a central London Consultant Orthopaedic Surgeon who specialises in the treatment of all aspects of shoulder and elbow problems. He has nearly 15 years of experience as a trauma surgeon treating fractures, tendon and ligament tears, and dislocations of the shoulder, humerus, elbow and forearm.
He also treats more chronic conditions, such as arthritis of the shoulder requiring total shoulder arthroplasty, repair of rotator cuff tears, management of primary and recurrent shoulder instability, and common conditions of impingement and ACJ problems that require arthroscopic (key-hole) surgery.
He has had a variety of leadership and advisory roles both in the NHS and private sector. He has been the service director and clinical director of Chelsea and Westminster NHS Hospitals Trust Orthopaedic Department on several occasions, and helped to steer the department through the COVID pandemic. He sits on the Medical Advisory Committee at King Edward VII’s Hospital and represents the Shoulder and Elbow Consultants at The Lister Hospital in the wider HCA private hospital group.
He has research interests in proximal humerus fracture fixation methods, the placement of the glenoid component in Total Joint Arthroplasty, and bone cell biology pertaining to osseointegration of humeral implants.
He studied medicine at St John’s College Cambridge, where he obtained an MA in Biological Anthropology. After a further 3 years at St Mary’s Hospital, Imperial College in London, he qualified as a doctor in 1997. Specialist Registrar training in Trauma and Orthopaedics took place on the NE Thames training programme based at University College London Hospital. Fellowships in Upper Limb Surgery followed at St Mary’s Hospital and UCLH. Simultaneously, Andrew researched in bone cell biology at Imperial College and The Royal Veterinary College, and researched methods of proximal humerus fracture fixation at the Biomechanical Engineering Department at Imperial College.
He became a Consultant in Trauma and Orthopaedics at Chelsea and Westminster NHS Hospitals Trust in 2009.
Andrew has published papers in peer reviewed journals, and has presented on the podium at National and International Conferences. He regularly lectures at educational meetings and cadaveric surgical instructional courses, and supervises the education of trainee surgeons in the NHS.
He is married with 2 children and has a passion for road cycling, running, skiing and golf. He played rugby at Cambridge university and St Mary’s Hospital. He is the current President of Imperial College School of Medicine Golf Society. Many of the conditions he treats are related to those sports which very much helps with the doctor/ patient understanding and relationship.
