About me

Professor Epstein specialises in providing advice and guidance across the range of digestive disorders as well as offering minimally invasive diagnostics.

He qualified in South Africa and soon thereafter, moved to London where he specialised in hepatology and gastroenterology in Professor Dame Sheila Sherlock's medical unit at the Royal Free Hospital. In 1986 he was appointed consultant gastroenterologist and in 2007, was awarded a UCL personal chair in gastroenterology. He has published over 100 peer reviewed publications and is the senior author of the best selling textbook "Clinical Examination". Professor Epstein led the development of the Sheila Sherlock Education Centre at the Royal Free, the endoscopy and laparoscopic simulation centre, and the iConsult project designed to streamline the patient pathway. He is currently the medical director of the Royal Free Private Patient Minimally Invasive Gastroenterology Diagnostic Unit (MIGe) and and is a nationally and internationally recognised expert in small and large intestinal capsule endoscopy. His minimally invasive diagnostic lab also offers breath testing for lactose and FODMAP intolerance, small intestinal bacterial overgrowth (SIBO), Professor Epstein's MIGe unit has unique expertise in using new technology to inform on the function of the vagus nerve, the "invisible organ" or "biological information superhighway that connects the digestive tract to the brain (the brain gut axis).

Areas of interest

I see adult patients with persistent or unexplained digestive symptoms; My areas of expertise is in the field of minimally invasive gastroenterology; include whole bowel capsule endoscopy (small and large bowel) to detect bleeding, inflammation, and polyps without the need for sedation; I investigate functional gut disorders such as IBS and functional dyspepsia by assessing vagus nerve tone and autonomic balance using 72-hour heart rate variability monitoring; I also offer breath testing for SIBO, lactose intolerance, and FODMAP sensitivity, and provide microbiome-focused treatment plans that integrate diet, gut-directed therapy, and non-invasive vagus nerve stimulation to support long-term physiological wellbeing.
