About me
Mr Marc Laniado is a consultant urologist who specialises in diagnosing and treating men with prostate cancer and the enlarged prostate (BPH). He aims to return men to everyday life quickly with the least side effects. Being a consultant since 2002 in the full-time direct clinical care of patients, he has excellent experience and expertise without other distractions. Marc Laniado offers an individualised approach for each man with either prostate enlargement or prostate cancer, tailoring the tests or treatments to the specific values of the man he sees.
For men who need to find out if prostate cancer is present most safely and accurately, he offers:
- 3 tesla multiparametric MRI performed at the best imaging sites & reported by the most reliable radiologist (quality is vital for MRI)
- SelectMDx/ExoDx urine tests for prostate cancer
- MRI-targeted using software-registration prostate biopsies under local or general anaesthesia
- Prolaris: a particular way of analysing prostate biopsies that better determines if cancer is very low-risk and defer treatment
For men who want to treat cancer and keep erections and bladder control as much as possible:
- Focal therapy with HIFU and NanoKnife as it preserves bladder control and erections better than surgery or radiotherapy
- robotic Retzius-sparing prostatectomy with full functional urethral length preservation and NeuroSAFE. The combination is the best surgical technique to stay dry and keep erections.
For men with urinary symptoms due to BPH, Marc Laniado advises men on lifestyle changes and medications. Where these are unsuccessful, he performs day-case procedures that alleviate urinary symptoms without affecting ejaculation:
- UroLift (implants that hold the prostate wide open)
- Rezum (steam to shrink the prostate)
Some men have unsuitable prostates and need either:
- Aquablation (high-speed water to blow away prostate tissue with affecting erections)
- HoLEP (Holmium Laser Enucleation of the Prostate using an en-bloc technique with early apical sphincter release).
These are performed as day-case sometimes or overnight stay. Aquablation significantly improves urinary symptoms in most patients without affecting sexual function in most men. HoLEP most effectively alleviates urinary symptoms even in enormous prostate. The en-bloc technique with early apical sphincter release results in fewer side effects than the conventional way of doing HoLEP.
He trained in open prostatectomy, started laparoscopic prostatectomies in 2006, moved onto robotic prostatectomies in 2008/9 and the Retius-sparing technique in 2016. He had done more than 1000 cases. He operates regularly (100 cases per year) at the Princess Grace Hospital for private patients and the Royal Berkshire Hospital for NHS patients. He represents the East Berkshire part of the robotic prostatectomy team.
Marc Laniado is the prostate cancer lead at Wexham Park Hospital (Frimley Health). He has driven the development of multiparametric MRI and MRI-targeted fusion biopsies of the prostate to diagnose men accurately. He started MRI-targeted biopsies in 2012 and does over 200 a year. He introduced Retzius sparing prostatectomy in 2016. He is the primary investigator at Wexham Park for prostate cancer clinical trials.
By continually increasing his knowledge and awareness of developments for urological conditions, he brings his expertise and experience to the patient by introducing them into his regular practice, ensuring that patients receive the very best care.
After graduating from Guy's and St Thomas' medical school, Mr Laniado studied in London and at the Cleveland Clinic. He has since gained further recognition and awarded additional qualifications and an award from The British Urological Foundation Fellowship, Gilbert Bursary and other prizes.
Outside of work, he has a wife, twin boys and two dogs. He enjoys walking his dogs and running in the parks around Windsor, playing tennis
and sailing in Poole.
