About me

Mr Jawad Sultan is a Consultant Trauma and Orthopaedic Surgeon who specialises exclusively in knee surgery in Manchester. His clinical practice includes partial and total knee replacement, ACL reconstruction, and the management of complex multi-ligament knee injuries.

He has a specialist interest in robotic-assisted knee replacement (MAKO) and patient-specific customised knee replacement (Conformis) for selected patients. Mr Sultan treats the full range of knee conditions including knee arthritis, sports injuries, meniscal tears, patellar instability, and complex knee instability problems. His practice includes both routine and advanced knee surgery, including revision ACL reconstruction, osteotomies around the knee, cartilage restoration procedures and knee ligament reconstruction surgery.

Mr Sultan completed specialist orthopaedic training in the North West of England and was awarded the Fellowship of the Royal College of Surgeons (FRCS Trauma & Orthopaedics) in 2016. He undertook specialist knee fellowships in Harrogate and Cardiff, and completed travelling fellowships to France and the United States, working with internationally recognised knee surgeons specialising in partial and total knee replacement, osteotomy surgery, ACL reconstruction, patellofemoral joint surgery, and multi-ligament knee reconstruction.

Following five years as a Consultant at Royal Bolton Hospital, Mr Sultan was appointed in 2021 to lead acute knee services at Manchester University NHS Foundation Trust, based at Manchester Royal Infirmary Major Trauma Centre and Trafford General Hospital (Manchester Orthopaedic Centre).

Mr Sultan is experienced in clinical and laboratory research. He completed an MSc in Orthopaedic Engineering at Cardiff University. His dissertation, A New Approach to Prevention of Knee Osteoarthritis, was presented nationally and internationally and was awarded the Sir John Charnley Prize and the British Association for Surgery of the Knee (BASK) Prize.

He has several peer-reviewed publications and has delivered numerous presentations at national and international conferences. Mr Sultan regularly teaches on knee and trauma surgical courses, examines medical students at the University of Manchester, and is actively involved in the training and development of trainee surgeons in the NHS.
