About me

Mr. James Crosbie entered the Royal College of Surgeons in Ireland undergraduate medical school in 1990, having been awarded the Arthur Jacob Open Medical Scholarship. He completed overseas electives in the Johns Hopkins Hospital and Mayo Clinic in the USA before graduating with a second class honours degree in 1996. Mr Crosbie completed his basic surgical training in Dublin and subsequently attained a Masters Degree for research on pelvic floor function. He completed his higher surgical training in London and then a fellowship in Colorectal surgery at St. Thomas’ Hospital and University College Hospital. Mr Crosbie was appointed Senior Lecturer/Honorary Consultant Colorectal Surgeon at University College London in 2009.During his time as site lead for Undergraduate Surgical Teaching at the Bloomsbury Campus, he was Chair of the Surgical MMG; was instrumental in the introduction of a new undergraduate curriculum at UCL and received top teacher awards. He continues to maintain an active role in teaching, research and clinical trials. Current research is looking at the role of stem cells in anal sphincter reconstruction and microspheres for treating anal fistula.
His clinical practice focusses on colorectal and anal cancer; endoscopy (gastroscopy/colonoscopy) and advanced procotology (recurrent anal fistula/fissures/haemorrhoids). In partnership with his colorectal colleagues at UCLH, he has pioneered the introduction of new anorectal techniques/operations : secca for incontinence; artificial bowel sphincter and abdominal wall reconstruction for recurrent incisional hernia. Mr Crosbie is Surgical Lead for Anal Cancer at University College London Hospital and runs a specialist clinic in the management of Anal Intra-epithelial neoplasia
