About me

Michael is a Consultant in Paediatric Allergy at one of the largest teaching hospitals in the UK, St George’s Hospital, in London, and is an internationally recognised leader in the field of paediatric allergy research with a particular interest in preventing allergies from developing.

Michael graduated from St George’s, University of London, with Distinctions in both Medicine and Surgery. During his training he undertook an intercalated degree in Epidemiology and was awarded the Polock Prize for the highest 1st class degree in the Medical School. After graduating he undertook clinical training in Paediatrics on the South London Paediatric training rotation. He was then awarded a highly prestigious Wellcome Training fellowship in Clinical Epidemiology during which he undertook research for which he was awarded a PhD on allergy in farming children in Shropshire. Having completed his PhD he was awarded honorary GRID training status on the UK Higher Specialist Training Programme in Paediatric Allergy and Immunology. This included training in some of the UK’s leading teaching hospitals: St Mary’s Hospital, Southampton Hospital, and Great Ormond Street Hospital. Michael has dual accreditation and is on the specialist register for both Paediatrics and Paediatric Allergy. Michael is also certified by the European Academy of Allergology and Clinical Immunology (EAACI) as a European Paediatric Allergist. During his training, Michael also completed an MSc at the London School of Hygiene in Clinical Epidemiology.

In his NHS service, Michael works with outstanding colleagues providing a comprehensive allergy service with general and specialist clinics, undertaking food challenges and providing immunotherapy.
Michael’s clinical and research interests are in food allergy prevention, diagnosis and treatment. For ten years Michael ran the Enquiring About Tolerance (EAT) Study, the largest clinical trial undertaken in the world to introduce six allergenic foods to young infants to see if this would protect them from developing food allergies. The fruits of this research have led to infant feeding guidelines changing around the world. Michael has also published research on the influence of infant moisturisation on the development of allergies. He continues to be actively involved in research in the UK and abroad, including projects in Ecuador and Brazil, all aiming to reduce the burden of allergies in children.

Michael has approaching 100 publications in the field of allergy, including papers and chapters. He has been invited to give talks around the world including as guest international speaker at the Japanese and Australian allergy meetings. He has contributed to international guideline documents and is a member of the Paediatric Group of the British Society of Allergy and Clinical Immunology.

Michael enjoys excellent feedback from patients and colleagues and participates in annual appraisal of his practice and research.
