About me

I qualified from Nottingham University Medical School in 1997, and trained in Nottingham and at the Derby Royal Infirmary before completing an upper limb fellowship at the Wrightington Upper Limb Unit in 2008. I was appointed Consultant Trauma and Orthopaedic Surgeon, Nottingham University Hospitals NHS Trust in 2009. My sub-speciality is shoulder and elbow surgery.
I am the clinical lead for elective shoulder and elbow surgery at The Nottingham Shoulder & Elbow Unit, Nottingham City Hospital and the clinical lead for shoulder trauma at the East Midlands Major Trauma Centre, Queens Medical Centre. I set up and Chair the East Midlands Specialist Orthopaedic Network for Shoulder & Elbow Arthroplasty. I undertake primary, complex and revision shoulder arthroplasty in the young and elderly, and regularly receive tertiary referrals from other shoulder specialists. I have a very large arthroscopic, arthroplasty and trauma practice.
I am a Member of the National Centre for Sports and Exercise Medicine (NCSEM), at Loughborough University where I have a regular clinic. The NCSEM is an Olympic legacy project delivering education, research and clinical services in sport, exercise and physical activity. I regularly review elite athletes with sports injuries.
I have active roles in audit, research, teaching and training. My research interests include acute rotator cuff tears, shoulder injuries in athletes, proximal humeral fractures and shoulder arthroplasty. I am a Clinical Investigator for a National Institute for Health Research (NIHR), shoulder replacement study. I am a co-applicant for a further NIHR shoulder arthroplasty study due to start late 2022 / early 2023. I regularly organise, lecture and demonstrate surgical techniques in shoulder surgery in the UK and Europe. I have been invited to give Instructional Course Lectures (Coventry 2017, Harrogate 2019, Virtual Meeting 2021, Newport 2023) and Masterclass Lectures (Glasgow 2018) for the British Elbow & Shoulder Society and a shoulder & elbow update for the British Orthopaedic Association (Birmingham 2018).

I have a special interest in shoulder injuries as well as degenerative conditions of the shoulder and elbow.
