About me

After completing my Neurosurgical training in Neurosurgery in India & working as a Consultant Neurosurgeon at GB Pant Hospital affiliated to University of Delhi, India for 6 years, I moved to UK in 1995. I obtained my UK neurosurgical training at �United Leeds Teaching Hospitals� in Leeds. After obtaining Fellowship of the RCS of England in 1997, Specialist Accreditation in 1999, Intercollegiate Fellowship in Surgical Neurology (FRCS SN) in April 2000 and �Certificate of Completion of Specialist Training in May 2001�, I was appointed as a Substantive Consultant Neurosurgeon on the 16 August 2001 at University Hospitals of Coventry and Warwickshire in Coventry, UK (over 22 years of clinical experience)

CLINICAL EXPERIENCE Every year, I consult approximately 1900 patients (new & FU) in the NHS and approximately 840 patients (new, FU, NHS & Private) in the Private Hospitals (majority spine). In the last 22 years, (conservative estimate), I have carried out approximately 4500 spinal operations (cervical & Lumbar) in NHS and Private Hospitals including very complex cervical spine procedures. �BBC West Midland News� telecast my first �Total cervical disc replacement� surgery on the 12 June 2007.

ADMINISTRATIVE EXPERIENCE: 1. DEPARTMENTAL: As Clinical Lead, I led recruitment, Clinical Governance, Quality Improvement & Business planning. I developed Trust Guidelines for 1) Prevention of wrong level spine surgery & GP referral of patients with back & neck pain 2) Protocols for management of patients with aSAH 3) �Web based referral system�.

REGIONAL: A) I am the Regional Specialty Professional Advisor in Neurosurgery for the West Midlands appointed by the RCS England. B) As Chairman Specialty Training Committee (STC) in Neurosurgery for West Midlands (2005-12), I liaised with the Dean, TPDs (four Neurosurgical units) & respective CMOs, SAC and Royal Colleges. I a) Validated trainees b) Allocated placements c) Chaired ARCP panels d) Arranged training for Trainers.

NATIONAL: A) I was member of the SAC (Specialty Advisory Committee) in Neurosurgery (Advising about Neurosurgical training to four Royal Colleges). It monitors standards of �National Neurosurgery Selection� & �Neurosurgery Exit Exam�, Work force planning and certification of Completion of Neurosurgical Training. a) As SAC liaison member I monitored standard of training in three Neurosurgical units and certification of their trainees. B) As member of the National Neurosurgery Selection Board I was involved in �National recruitment of Neurosurgical trainees� for UK.

INTERNATIONAL: A) As UK representative to the European Association of Neurological Societies (EANS) Training Committee (2012-16), I selected British trainees for EANS courses.

TRAINING EXPERIENCE: REGIONAL: As Chairman of STC, I developed a) Mandatory �Regional Study Day� b) Regional �Curriculum based teaching programme� c) �Mock Exit examination in Neurosurgery�.

NATIONAL: A) I conceptualised, developed & organised the first (2016) & subsequent National ST3 Boot camps (now Simulation courses) in Neurosurgery. This �high fidelity simulation course� (recognised by RCS England & part of ST3 National Curriculum), teaches ST3 trainees relevant operative approaches using simulation in consent & positioning, surgical approach on cadavers using operating microscope, high speed drills & navigation system. Trainees get a �real life experience� preparing them for senior(ST4) role.

INTERNATIONAL: A) Organised International Simulation courses for all level of trainees (FY2 to ST8). B) Taught on EANS courses in Europe covering spine & neurovascular. B)Taught on ACNS courses in Rus

1. SPINE A) Degenerative cervical spine disease (disc & stenosis) B) Degenerative lumbar disease (Disc & stenosis C) Whiplash injuries involving cervical & lumbar spine D) Intradural/extramedullary benign spinal tumours. E) Cervical spine trauma and F) Rheumatoid cervical spine;
2. NEUROVASCULAR: management for aSAH, Aneurysms, AVMs, cavernomas (& surgery);
3. BENIGN CRANIAL TUMOURS Meningiomas, III Ventricular colloid cyst (transcallosal approach), arachnoid cyst, choroid plexus papillomas;
4. Surgery for TRIGEMINAL NEURALGIA, HEMIFACIAL SPASM (microvascular decompression);
5. CHIARY MALFORMATION (including craniocervical decompression);
6. ADULT HYDROCEPHALUS: Special interest in Endocopic III Ventriculostomy
